Fatima Sana to Captain Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cup 2024

In a significant development for Pakistan women’s cricket, Fatima Sana has been named the captain of the national team for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates from October 3 to 20. The decision was made unanimously by the women’s national selection committee, marking a new chapter in the young cricketer’s career.

A Promising Leader at the Helm

At just 22 years old, Fatima Sana has already made a name for herself on the international stage, having played 41 ODIs and 40 T20Is. Her leadership credentials were bolstered when she captained the Pakistan side to a memorable ODI victory against New Zealand in a Super Over at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, in December 2023. Fatima’s appointment as captain reflects the confidence the selectors have in her ability to lead the team in one of the most prestigious tournaments in women’s cricket.

Fatima takes over the captaincy from the experienced all-rounder Nida Dar, who had taken the reins from Bismah Maroof as the all-format captain. Nida Dar, with 112 ODIs and 153 T20Is to her name, remains an integral part of the squad. Her experience will be invaluable as Pakistan competes in Group A against formidable opponents like Australia, India, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. The revised fixtures for the group will be announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the coming days.

Squad Composition and Key Inclusions

The selection committee has retained the core of the squad that participated in the ACC Women’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka last month. Notable among the retained players are Aliya Riaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sundhu, and Tuba Hassan. The squad has seen only one change, with right-handed batter Sadaf Shamas making a return in place of wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi, who will travel with the team as a reserve player.

Sadaf Shamas, who was part of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa, brings depth to the batting lineup. Additionally, the squad has been bolstered by the inclusion of uncapped left-arm pacer Tasmia Rubab, reflecting the selectors’ intent to introduce fresh talent ahead of the global tournament. Left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal has also been included in the squad, subject to fitness clearance.

Looking Ahead to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

The appointment of Fatima Sana as captain comes at a critical juncture for Pakistan women’s cricket. As the team prepares to face some of the strongest sides in world cricket, the blend of youth and experience in the squad will be crucial. Fatima’s leadership, combined with the seasoned presence of players like Nida Dar and Aliya Riaz, is expected to provide a balanced approach to the challenges ahead.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will not only test Pakistan’s on-field capabilities but also offer an opportunity for the team to showcase their growth and resilience on the global stage. With the tournament being held in the UAE, conditions are expected to favor subcontinental teams, adding an extra layer of excitement for Pakistan’s fans.
